So, it's that time of year when everyone seems to take their turns getting sick with a cold/flu/some combination of the two. Leon was down for the count right after Aladdin, and lots of people in my life have been dropping like flies. In the face of it, I've been soooooo proud to see myself stay healthy. Then the other day I woke up and it kinda hurt to swallow. Just the beginning tinge of badness. So, I've been doing a crazy amount of things to SUPER self-care and make sure my immune system ends up on top. It's working...and in my sheer relief...I want to share with you my tricks in case they might be able to help you be the "one who refuses to fall"...
1. Grapefruit Seed Extract
I've been gargling with it, and consuming it. Don't get me wrong...the stuff TASTES HORRIBLE. Seriously bad. But when I'm serious enough about winning the fight against bossy viruses, I go to this stuff. 5 to 10 drops in a cup of warm water. Gargle. Tons. Like, every few hours. And, then, if you are brave, swallow some. You'll find this stuff at health food stores, and the staff there can tell you more about dosages, etc. This stuff is bad ass, and I love it. Some people like Oil Of Oregano, which has similar benefits.
It's my go-to food the second I need to boost my immune system. It's so packed with Vitamin C that is puts oranges to shame. Plus, it has chlorophyll, and fiber, and about a zillion other things your immunity needs to fight the bad guys. I start putting it into my morning green smoothies. I make my two-ingredient broccoli soup. I mow down on it raw. Anything I can think to do to get as much into my system as I can.
Here's my theory. Every time you land in REM, your body rebuilds and takes you one step close to perfect health. I say theory because I am not about to site any actual science that might back me up on this. But it is what seems to be true for me, so when I feel the first signs of anything like I did this week, I sleep as much and as often as possible. I know this can be tricky if you end up getting sick enough that the illness keeps you from sleeping...luckily this week, I've been able to sleep without using any sort of drugs.
4. Steaming With Essential Oils
I adore this one. It is so comforting and so healing. I might steam by using a hot bath & drop my essential oils (usually tea tree or eucalyptus for when I'm under the weather) right into the bath water. But I also do the whole: bucket of boiling hot water, essential oils into bucket, head over bucket, encompassed by towel thing. This simple tool can sometimes speed up my healing ten fold. Plus, it feels great to do, so that is a bonus:)
5. Colon Hydrotherapy
I get it. This is a controversial one, but I believe that sometimes the reason our immune system fails to protect us, is because we've made it soooo busy trying to detoxify our toxic selves. They say immunity begins in the gut, so in addition to eating a very light, alkaline, pure diet while I'm sick, I also like to get any festering crap that is bunging up my bowel out as fast as possible. Sometimes cost keeps me from doing this. But I do what I can. Just take as many things off your immune system's To Do list, so it can win your battle.
6. Healing, Herbal Teas
If I tried to explain how much tea I've drank in the last 72 hours, you'd never believe me. When I feel ick, I never DON'T have a tea in my hand. There are soooo many wonderful, healing blends to choose from. Sometimes you can even find a tea specific to your symptoms, or look for a echincea tea (or dissolve vitamin C tablets in the tea for an extra blast). I've been addicted to this amazing Ayurvedic blend from David's Tea this week. And right now, as I type this, I've got a splendid berry blend. If you ever see me with tea and broccoli at the same time, you'll know I'm trying to create a miracle.
